Chef Job Purpose

Oversees a restaurant's kitchen by managing other members of the food preparation team, deciding what dishes to serve and adjusting orders to meet guests' requests. May assist in prep work, such as chopping vegetables, but more often will be involved in cooking specialty dishes. What does a Chef do?

A Chef is in charge of preparing the food a restaurant serves. Chefs have different responsibilities depending on their skill level. For example, an Executive Chef will create the menu and oversee kitchen staff. Sous chefs are second-in-command and, among other responsibilities, make sure that all kitchen equipment is functional.     Many Chefs complete formal education before entering the workforce, such as culinary degrees and management programs. Chefs typically don’t receive on-the-job training, since it’s expected that they will have completed experience as a cook before moving into a role taking on broader responsibilities. You also want to consider the type of experience, such as the types of restaurants where a Chef candidate worked.

    Chefs typically have five or more years of experience, though exceptions may be made depending on the type of experience or the Chef’s educational background. Chefs typically gain real-world experience through cook positions or other junior-level roles.
